We’ve all heard about “lipo”—perhaps from friends or family members, perhaps from tales of the lifestyles of the rich and famous. However, few understand what a liposuction procedure entails. Yes, liposuction does use suction to remove unwanted excess fat from the body, but it isn’t as simple as vacuuming out one’s trouble areas.Schedule consultation
In a traditional liposuction procedure, a doctor inserts thin medical tubes called “cannula” through small incisions in the target area of the body. Then, as the doctor moves these cannula carefully to loosen the fatty tissue, the fat is suctioned out via the tubes. Usually, this procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and the patient is not awake for the duration. Areas of the body that are commonly targeted for fat removal include the stomach, hips, thighs, chin, cheeks/jowls, arms, back, and buttocks.
Liposuction can be performed in various areas on the body including the:
There are a number of different liposuction types and techniques that can be used in addition to traditional liposuction. In a process called tumescent liposuction, the patient does not necessarily need to undergo general anesthesia. Instead, the doctor applies a local anesthetic to numb the target area, followed by the injection of an anesthetic solution into the fatty tissue itself. By numbing the area to be suctioned, the doctor can easily insert the cannula and remove the excess fat without needing to put the patient completely to sleep.¹
In laser liposuction, a specialized low-energy laser is used to liquefy the excess fat. This allows for easy fat removal that does not require the same physical movements as traditional liposuction to loosen the fat from the skin. Similarly, ultrasound liposuction liquefies the fatty tissue using ultrasound frequencies and is commonly used around the neck, back, sides and ribcage area.

One of the great benefits of modern liposuction techniques is that it can be performed as an outpatient procedure with a fairly straightforward recovery. Depending upon the areas treated, the amount of work done, and various individual differences, your recovery may take anywhere from a few days to a month to complete. The majority of patients can move around fairly normally as soon as the anesthesia has worn off.
Symptoms like swelling and bruising are very common in the first week or two, so areas that were worked on are typically wrapped with some manner of bandaging or support garments to provide compression. Some drainage of fluid from incisions is also common. If your doctor suspects that you may be at risk of infection, he or she may prescribe a course of antibiotics to take during recovery.
You can expect great results if you have realistic expectations from Rhinoplasty. Final results of nose reshaping cosmetic surgery may not be apparent until 6 months to a year after the surgery.
